Re-homing your Dalmatian
About re-homing
Scottish Dalmatian Welfare can find suitable new homes for Dalmatians who require them. We cover all areas of Scotland and
will consider rehoming any Dalmatian residing within the Scottish region.
Our re-homing policy
Where a Dalmatian owner contacts us to discuss rehoming we will offer them support and advice in an attempt to help them keep their dogs. If this is not possible we will continue with the rehoming procedure as outlined.
We will attempt to rehome any Dalmatian, regardless of sex, age, health or behaviour, where:
Scottish Dalmatian Welfare has a strict non-destruct policy and we will never put a dog to sleep unless we are advised to do so by a qualified veterinary surgeon.
We will attempt to rehome any Dalmatian, regardless of sex, age, health or behaviour, where:
- changes in their current owner’s circumstances mean they are no longer able to provide a home for them; or
- their current owners are no longer able to take proper care of them; or
- they are at risk due to neglect.

After you contact us
After you contact us, one of our coordinators will get in touch to discuss your circumstances, explain the rehoming process and make any further arrangements with you.
Outline re-homing procedure
Where it is agreed that an individual Dalmatian is to be rehomed, Scottish Dalmatian Welfare shall:
- Carry out a home visit to meet the Dalmatian and current owner;
- Complete an assessment questionnaire to get important information about the dog;
- Make arrangements for the dog’s care whilst a new home is found and, if necessary; take the dog into our care;
- List the Dalmatian in the dogs waiting section of our website and other selected dog rescue services;
- Complete all handover documents and ask the current owner to sign the handover agreement;
- Before rehoming, fund and carry out neutering / spaying, inoculations and any other necessary medical procedures;
- Vet and assess potential new owners;
- Place the Dalmatian in a suitable new home.
Interim care
Our preference is that Dalmatians to be rehomed remain with their current owners until a new home is found as this makes the transition less stressful for the dog and has the least financial impact on the charity. We understand, however, that this may not always be possible.
Where the current owner cannot keep the Dalmatian until a new home is found our next preference is to place the dog with a foster carer. This means the dog can continue to live in a home environment and affords a greater opportunity to understand their behaviour, likes and dislikes so we can make new owners aware of what these are.

Keeping in touch
When you handover your Dalmatian to Scottish Dalmatian Welfare, you will be asked to sign a handover contract relinquishing all future ownership rights. You must understand that, at this point, your ownership of the dog has come to an end and you have no entitlement to receive any further updates or information. Although we may be able to provide some limited information upon request there are no formal arrangements in place to advise previous owners about the progress of an individual dog. You should also consider privacy of the dog’s new owners.
Contribution
Scottish Dalmatian Welfare does not ask for any donation or contribution in return for rehoming a dog. Should you wish to support the work of Scottish Dalmatian Welfare we have arrangements in place to accept donations.
